Back to School Physicals

For the last few months, stores have been feverishly advertising back to school sales. Now, it’s already time for kids to pack up their pencils and backpacks and head back to school. This season adds a lot of things to a parents to do list such as finding new clothes and finishing up summer programs.  More importantly, it’s also the time that parents need to schedule their children’s back to school physicals.

Annual physicals are important for all children but especially for ages two through five. Before a child enters kindergarten, your doctor will ensure that the child is up-to-date on vaccinations. As part of the registration process, most schools require immunization records before your child can start school.

Starting late can result in a rush to complete back to school physicals. Although many schools require physicals, especially if your child is an athlete, it’s important for parents to get their child a school physical every year.

While vaccines are an important part of your children’s health, check-ups are more than that. They are a way to ensure that children are growing and developing in a healthy way, screen for life-affecting diseases and provide a time to counsel children on safety issues.

Of course, you can have your child examined at any time of the year, but it would be easier to keep track of exam schedules when you schedule it before school starts. It is the perfect time to schedule your child’s annual physical.

“Early diagnosis of medical conditions can be a lifesaver and can allow for treatment to be administered before the condition worsens,” stated Dr. Tamara Lim, Medical Director and Pediatrician for Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness. “There are a number of conditions which can be passed from parents to their children even if the parents are mere carriers of the genes and not suffering from the condition themselves. It is extremely important to always keep your family’s medical history updated and as comprehensive as possible,” Lim added.
